Home Renovation & Refurbishment in Hertfordshire
Whole-house refurbishments, single rooms, and the repairs people put off. No job is too small to look at.
From the roof down to the foundations
Don't put off those little jobs any longer. No job is too big or too small for Holman Simmons and our wide experience of construction gives us the added advantage of being able to diagnose problems from the roof down to the foundations, whilst still keeping costs to a minimum. We undertake all types of work from small-scale home repair projects to larger refurbishments.
Honest, and only what needs doing
Our experience in all areas of building work enables us to give specialist and qualified advice on restoring and repairing any structural problems you may have. We will only offer honest, fair and up-front recommendations. We can carry out repairs to all types, styles and ages of building.
Kitchens and bathrooms, as part of the works
Kitchens and bathrooms come as part of a bigger job rather than on their own. If we are refurbishing your ground floor or building you an extension, the new kitchen goes in as part of it, and the same is true of a bathroom or shower room in a renovation. First fix, tiling, second fix and making good are all ours, so the room is finished by the same team that opened up the wall.
We work around you living there
Our team is friendly, engaging and above all courteous. It's important to us that we work with you to ensure minimum disruption to your home environment. No matter what size job, we'll show complete respect both to your home and the people who live there and fit in around you at all times.
Refurbishments across the county
Some people call it a renovation, some a refurbishment, and some just want a renovator who will turn up and finish. It is the same work either way. We do it in Hertford where we are based, and across Ware, St Albans, Welwyn Garden City, Bishop's Stortford, Hoddesdon, Buntingford and Stevenage. Whole houses, single rooms, and putting right what another builder got wrong. Each town has its own page, linked below.
Building refurbishments in St Albans
In St Albans we took a house through an extension and a full ground-floor refurbishment, wrapped up in November 2025. It is the first photograph in the gallery on this page. The city has extensive conservation areas and a lot of listed buildings, so on an older house it is worth knowing what consent the work needs before anything starts. Applications go to St Albans City and District Council rather than East Herts, which covers most of our patch. Whole house or one floor, it is the same team from the strip-out to the second fix.
Building refurbishments in Welwyn Garden City
Our work in Welwyn Garden City so far has been extensions rather than refurbishments, including a rear extension in Panshanger that was up by August 2025 and plastered out by October. A refurbishment uses the same trades our team brings to every one of those jobs: knocking through, plastering, second fix and making good. Much of the town sits in a conservation area, with design controls that come from it being a planned garden city, so changes to the outside of a house can need consent from Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council. We tell you where you stand on the free visit.

Common questions
Do you take on small jobs?
Yes. No job is too big or too small, and our wide experience of construction lets us diagnose problems from the roof down to the foundations whilst still keeping costs to a minimum.
Can we live in the house while you work?
Usually, and most of our customers do. All work is carried out respectfully with minimal disruption to your premises and activities. We plan around the fact that you are living in it.
Do you fit kitchens and bathrooms?
As part of a bigger job, yes. If we are refurbishing the house or building your extension, the kitchen or bathroom goes in as part of the works and we finish it. We do not take on a kitchen or a bathroom as a standalone fit on its own.
Can you fix what another builder got wrong?
Yes, and we have. It is worth getting an honest opinion on what is actually wrong before anyone starts putting it right.
Do you take on refurbishments in St Albans and Welwyn Garden City?
Yes. We finished an extension and full ground-floor refurbishment in St Albans in November 2025, and we have built extensions in Welwyn Garden City, including one in Panshanger in 2025. Both are a run out from our Hertford yard, and the visit and the written quote are free wherever you are.
Want a proper price for it?
Tell us roughly what you are planning and Scott will come and look. The visit, the advice and the written quote are all free.
