HomeAbout

Family run from Hertford, since 2016.

Holman Simmons is a general building contractor based at Belfry House, Bell Lane in Hertford. We take on extensions, conversions and renovations across Hertfordshire, and we do the work ourselves.

We have built a solid reputation by delivering a quality end product, safely, on time and keeping within budget. We have formed excellent working relationships that keep our customers coming back to us and recommending us to their friends and family.

We deliver an honest, upfront approach to pricing all of our jobs so that you know realistically what the job will cost in advance. The quality of our workmanship is checked frequently and thoroughly by our project managers so that we always meet our own high standards.

Scott has over 20 years in the building trade and runs the sites himself. Ash looks after the plastering and finishing. The rest of the crew has been together for years, which is why the same faces turn up every morning rather than whoever was available.

The same two faces, start to finish

You will not be handed to a project manager you have never met. Scott quotes the job and runs the site, and Ash is on it with the team.

Ashley Round

Site Manager

Ash manages our sites day to day and has developed considerable skill in delivering outstanding plastering and finishing services. If Scott is not on site, Ash is, and either of them can answer a question without having to ring someone else.

Behind the two of them is a crew that has been together for years, which is why the same faces turn up every morning rather than whoever was available.

Tradesmen, not subcontractors

Groundwork, brickwork, carpentry, roofing and plastering are done by our own team — over 20 years in the trade, and a crew that has been together for years. The person who quotes your job is the person running the site.

A quote you can hold us to

An honest, up-front price so you know realistically what the job will cost in advance. Extras are agreed before they happen, and the invoice matches the quote.

We work around you

You're living in it while we're working in it, so we plan around that — tidy at the end of each day, respectful of the house and everyone in it, and straight with you about what's happening next.

We finish when we said we would

The timescale goes in the quote, not left vague, and we work to it. Our customers keep saying the same thing: the job was done in the time agreed, and often sooner.

    Groundwork and structure

The questions worth asking any builder

How much deposit should I pay a builder?

Never the whole job, and never in cash without a written quote behind it. We take a payment to start and a payment on completion, both against a quote that lists the work and the materials. Anything extra is agreed before it happens, so the invoice matches what you were told.

What questions should I ask a builder?

Ask who is actually doing the work and whether they are employed or subcontracted. Ask what happens if something is found once the ground is open. Ask for the quote in writing with the materials listed. And ask to see a job they finished recently, not just their best one from five years ago.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. The visit, the advice on what's possible and the written quote are all free and carry no obligation. Scott visits personally.

Will you make a mess of my house?

All work is carried out respectfully with minimal disruption to your premises and activities. You're living in it while we're working in it, and we plan around that.
